I always love the creative and festive holiday recipes that I see people making. I decided to try to dust off my inner creative this week and woke the kids up for a breakfast cooking project - Cinnamon Roll Ghosts!
We used a tube of refrigerated Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls with included frosting to make our ghosts.
The kids then chose between raisins, dried cranberries, and various size and color chocolate chips to decorate their ghosts.
Following the directions right on the package, I popped open the cannister of cinnamon rolls and separated them into the pre-formed rounds.
To make the ghosts, I had the kids elongate the cinnamon roll dough into a ghost shape. I then helped them to shape ripples at the bottom of the ghost to mimic the ghost shape.
I placed the ghost shaped buns on parchment paper and placed them in the oven, which I had heated per the package instructions.
When they came out of the oven, I spread the included white icing/glaze over each of the cinnamon roll ghosts, since they were still very hot. My kids are young, but this is probably a step that older kids would enjoy doing on their own.
I then plated the glazed ghosts and gave each kid a plate with their own ghosts to decorate with eyes and a mouth. Viv loves dried cranberries and used them. Henry loves chocolate chips. They both used their own creativity to design their ghost faces to their liking.
Then, once adorned, those ghosts got eaten right up as part of a tasty before school meall! We added some bananas, berries and a glass of milk to round out breakfast!
One design note: The cinnamon buns do grow and puff while baking, so if you want your cinnamon buns to end up shaped like ghosts you really have to start by shaping them fairly dramatically. Some of our ghosts ended up looking a bit more blob-like than I would have liked, but the kids were thrilled with the exercise (that is, until Henry took all the white chocolate chips and a meltdown promptly ensued!)
Wishing your family a fun Halloween filled with ghoulishly festive treats!
