Cook Kitz Teaches Your Kids to Cook; Challenges them to Create!

By Nicole Cerquitella, Publisher July 7, 2020

My family all loves good food, and we like to try new foods.

I always try to involve my kids in choosing recipes and meals for our family, shopping for ingredients, and participating in cooking at home.  They usually show great interest and Henry has gotten to be the master egg cracker in our house!

As he becomes a more advanced reader, I've involved him in looking at and reading recipes, too - a critical step in cooking, when you're cooking from a recipe!

What I really love, though, personally, is the art of cooking!   Taking a basic technique or concept and adding your own personal flare and creative touch to it, and hopefully coming up with an epic culinary masterpiece!

I've learned the hard way, though, that without those basic techniques and fundamentals about how food works and the chemical reactions of cooking, some experiments just crash and burn, big time!

I was so excited to hear about Cook Kitz, a delivery cooking kit business for families that delivers weekly cooking adventures right to your home (within their delivery radius)!  Cook Kitz can also be picked up!

Kits feature instructions for making a single featured recipe but also guide you and your kids through two additional choose your own adventure explorations!

The week we tried a kit, we were instructed on how to make edible cookie dough!

The kids LOVE cookie dough and were really excited about that.   The kit came with some pre-measured ingredients, and other ingredients that were not measured.

There were instructions included in the kit for a parent/older activity leader, and then some additional instructions or "things to try" that were broken into ideas for different age groups, which I thought was a really nice touch.  Cook Kitz are geared towards children aged 5 and older, but my 3 (almost 4) year old daughter loved participating!

While I tried to be a thorough instruction reader, my little crew of culinary adventurers took all the lids off of the ingredients at one time, and I failed to notice that the salt included in the recipe was not pre-measured.   Luckily we noticed the error and were able to scrape out the excess before ruining our special treat!   I tried to double down on the importance of the lesson being taught - to always read the whole recipe and all the steps first.  Pretty sure this fell on deaf ears, even for my 14 year old, but certainly for the younger two, who couldn't wait to adorn their creation with sprinkles and chocolate chips and marshmallows and more!

In addition to making edible cookie dough, the instructions also then walked us through how to make frozen cookie dough balls (that could be put into ice cream or eaten alone) and how to add a couple more ingredients and actually make baked cookies!

As for the taste, the kids were all in!   They thought the cookie dough tasted a bit different than the dough they had eaten in the past, which was probably because the recipe in the Cook Kitz was made with almond flour, which imparted a bit of a unique taste and texture.   They dug right in and ate their cookie, though, though - enjoying every spoonful!

The cookie dough was really a fun project, and the kids enjoyed the autonomy of deciding not only what to add to their cookie dough, but also deciding whether they wanted to take any of their creation and make frozen cookie dough balls or cookies with it.

I loved that the boxes taught some structured culinary lessons but also empowered them to explore and define their own taste and style.

Oh, and the packaging was really adorable!  Seriously, so cute!   This is a great way to spend an afternoon with the kiddos!

Future Cook Kitz look really fun, too - I saw one instructing on how to make a Focaccia Garden, one for popsicles and one for sweet and savory stadium snacks - all super fun!

Cook Kitz vary in price between $30 and $60 according to their website but current kits on their website at the time of this publication were $36, which included home delivery.

Try Cook Kitz while you can - kits will be sold every week through mid-August, offering a great adventure at home in place of many of the summer camp options that are still closed due to Covid.

My family was provided a kit from Cook Kitz in exchange for providing our honest review of the offering.
