Fantastic (And Free) Local Resource For Spanish Language Learners

By Alicia Nichols, Founder of MCPL Spanish Childrenโ€™s Book Recommendations May 7, 2019

Living in Montgomery County we have amazing Spanish resources available through our public library system. I quickly found, however, that it took some effort and a fair amount of patience to find what would actually work for my family at our current language learning levels (not to mention what would actually hold my children’s interest du jour – Pirates? Princesses? Puppies?) Standing in front of the shelves trying to find books that fit that bill while also keeping an eye on my rouge toddler seemed a daunting challenge. That’s when I realized I needed to approach this task a bit differently; I needed to plan ahead.  And so I started pouring over language education blogs, looking for highly recommended children’s books, then putting on hold whatever was available in our libraries. I worked that hold system until I felt the librarians probably groaned when they saw my name. I started taking notes about what was appealing about these books and how they worked (or didn’t work) for us as a family. At some point it clicked that this information would probably be helpful for other parents seeking to accomplish these same language learning goals.

MCPL Spanish Children’s Book Recommendations is just what its name implies, a Facebook group where you can find recommended Spanish children’s books that are currently in the Montgomery County library system. The books are listed with a brief description, a few pictures to give you a clear idea of their style and language level, and a link directly to the online library catalog entry. You can scroll through the page or you can search by popular topics, so if your child responds well to silly books or is currently into animal facts, you can jump right to those topics. When a title catches your eye you can simply click the link and put it on hold at your library!

Being able to make informed selections before you even enter the library can empower you to pursue your goals with more confidence.  In turn, when you find books that you and your children are excited about, you can share your discoveries with the MCPL Spanish Children’s Book Recommendations group as well. We do have a wealth of resources at our fingertips; the goal of this group is to help you discover them more fully.
