Parties At Henry's Sweet Retreat Can't Be Beat

By Ann Hill, Publisher, Macaroni Kid BCCP April 17, 2019

I love candy. It is a bit of a problem and when I first saw the sign for Henry's Sweet Retreat about four years ago, could I just walk by?  No way.  Let's just say that I have been back MANY times since but fortunately, three of those times I was actually invited to parties (so any calories consumed then don't count, right?)!

If you are considering a place for your child's party, look no further. They are fun and different. Don't get me wrong, jump places are awesome but if you want a unique and different gathering, cookie baking on the second floor of a locally-owned, award winning candy shop is IT.

Located on the mezzanine, which depending on seating and type of party, can hold up to 22 children, the space is airy and light. A cookie decorating party includes each child shaping cookies from a ball of dough with cookie cutters, playing 2-3 games/activities while cookies are baked and cooled, and then decorating the cookies with frosting and candy/decorations. No need for goody bags because each child takes their cookies home in a personal box!  Way more fun than the plastic whistle that your guests' parents will find and stomp on later that evening.

I want to highlight the over 9 activities that are options for the time when cookies are being baked and cooled because to me, that was one of the very best parts. At one party my kids attended, the birthday boy chose the "soda flight."  Each guest received four different soda flavors and had to try to guess the flavor. We're talking flavors like Butterbeer, Dog Drool Orange, Red Velvet Cupcake etc. There are over 30 to choose from. It was so funny to hear some of the guesses ("this one tastes like grass. But good tasting grass without any dirt"). There is also a game where you try to transfer 12 M&M’s from one cup to another using only a straw. The kids had a blast and it is actually a lot harder than you'd think!  If your birthday child would rather crafts than games, they have those options, too.

This type of fun isn't just for birthdays, of course.  One of the parties I was invited to was a Mom's/Daughter's Day Out and I've been in the shop before when there were Boy Scout Troops, some kind of sports team celebration and a graduation party. They are just good, clean (and tasty) fun.

For more information, visit Henry's Sweet Retreat's site but definitely visit the shop and see the space, if you've never been. You won't regret it and remember, any calories consumed when you're on a party scouting mission don't count!
