Have You Heard of Bethesda-Chevy Chase (BCC) Freecycle?

By Ann Hill July 1, 2018

If you are like I am, you have a ton of "stuff" that you don't need or use anymore.  While local agencies are always looking for donated children's toys and gear, some items you may have aren't high on their acceptance list. And it can really bog them down administratively to deal with those items. Enter Freecycle!

  • Two old picture frames, in so-so condition
  • A box of random-sized nails and screws
  • An old portable fan
  • Baby clothes in VERY used condition

Think no one would want these?  Think again!  They are all things I have given away on Freecycle (and very quickly, I might add). Best part, they aren't sitting in a landfill, taking-up space in Montgomery County. I have also found a few items on Freecycle.  An unopened can of paint, in a color my daughter loves on her bedroom wall and a series of popular children's fiction. I have never actually seen a Freecycler (you leave items on your driveway or porch for pick-up and only give your address when someone says they want your item). So as far as safety goes, I feel comfortable with it.

Follow the link below, register (it takes just a minute and the list moderator will approve you within a day or two) and check it out. Double-check your location on the map when registering. Like Macaroni Kid, Freecycle is hyper-local, which also means you won't be driving all over the DMV, if you chose to pick-up something. If nothing else, you may get rid of stuff that you think no one would want!
